When I was in a child and lived in Europe, our father would make us brush our teeth with Baking Soda, either once a week or when we would run out of toothpaste. As a child, I HATED it but he would stand there and watch us brush our teeth. My father made sure that we brushed our teeth at least twice a day and for at least two minutes. Anything less then that was unacceptable!
When I came to the US, the dentist appointments were just piling up on me. It seems that each time I went, a new cavity was discovered. One horrible visit I was given the worst news I though a child could hear, that I needed braces! I though it was a joke because everyone always said how nice my teeth looked…did they lie? Three thousand dollars and three years later I took off those horrible metal things that made my gums bleed, gave me grave pain that I couldn’t eat for a day, and which I cried over after each visit. When I was braces-free and leaving the dentist office the last time, the secretary told me to brush my teeth with baking soda when I got home and to not wash out my mouth afterwords.
When I came home that day, being braces-free I took a hard and long look at my teeth and was shocked at how yellow they were! I didn’t understand this because I would brush my teeth three times a day and would even floss! (Flossing with braces is a little different and takes time.) So, I did what I was told and grabbed the baking soda out of the fridge and went to work. I brushed my teeth that day at least four times, just with baking soda and after a month I saw a real difference!
Today, I make sure to brush my teeth with baking soda at least once a week and keep a small baking soda box in my medicine cabinet. Using white strips might be easier but it will eat away your tooth enamel and before you know it, your teeth will be falling out. If you want white and healthy teeth, I suggest that you brush, floss, and mouth wash daily! Using baking soda once a week will brighten your teeth and you don’t have to use it alone, you can pour the soda over your toothpaste and get to work. I suggest that you have a separate toothbrush when you use the baking soda, as the brush bristles will start to separate after the first use. Baking soda is cheap and under a dollar and it works!! You could spend 40 plus dollars on white strips or whitening treatments, or you could buy a small box of baking soda and see your teeth whiten before your eyes! Whiter teeth make you look younger and you will feel more confident, might even smile more!
